Confused about which Remark product to use for processing your forms? The following is a basic comparison of the Remark Office OMR® and Remark Classic OMR® packages…
Scanning Hardware:
The main difference between the two products is in the scanning hardware with which they work. Remark Office OMR works with common image scanners while Remark Classic OMR works with OMR scanners commonly associated with standardized testing, preprinted forms and number two pencils. The other major difference is in the types of forms that can be processed. As it uses an image scanner, Remark Office OMR is more flexible in that you can create and print your own forms. With Remark Classic OMR, you will typically be purchasing preprinted forms. The two products are very similar in most other respects. The basic interface is similar and they export to the same formats. Both include the powerful Remark Quick Stats® application for analyzing tests and surveys.
Remark Office OMR
Remark Office OMR is the flexible solution to your data entry needs that works with forms you create and print. Forms are created in any word processing, page layout or survey design software. Forms can be duplicated on a laser printer, photocopier, or if desired, can be professionally printed. Just follow our form design guidelines so that you get the best recognition results possible.
Remark Office OMR is a “trainable” software package. Rather than you having to conform to a particular form design, you tell the software what your form looks like. This process is fairly quick and simple. The result of the “training” process is the creation of a template file for your form. This template file can then be used to scan and process data from your completed forms.
Remark Office OMR works with common image scanners. These are the type of scanners that can also be used for scanning pictures or pages of text and are readily available from your local computer dealer or via mail order companies. Some manufacturers of image scanners include Fujitsu, Xerox, Lexmark, Canon, Ricoh and Panasonic.
Remark Classic OMR
Remark Classic OMR works with traditional optical mark readers. Typically, these machines are sold directly to the end user by the manufacturer’s sales representatives. Remark Classic OMR works with some or all OMR scanners from Pearson Assessments (formerly NCS), Sekonic, Chatsworth Data, Apperson, Peripheral Dynamics and Scantron. See the Remark Classic OMR supported OMR scanner list.
When using Remark Classic OMR, you use preprinted forms that are created to very exacting specifications. OMR scanners are specifically designed to read these specialized forms. The Remark Classic OMR software also uses template files to understand how to read a form. The software comes with many pre-defined templates for widely-used forms. Or, you can create templates for any OMR forms you wish to use.
After the template is created, you use the OMR scanner to scan the filled-in forms. Remark Classic OMR utilizes the OMR scanner's ability to understand what is on the form and displays the information in a grid. You can then export the data or use Remark Classic OMR's built in analysis features.
