The History of the Shadowbase Source and Target Dogs

Source and Target

Some people have asked us, “What’s up with the dogs on your ads and website?”

Well, the short answer is that the managers and executives who run the Shadowbase Products Group love dogs and like including them on our ads and website as reminders. The long answer is that in the past, man’s best friend was useful in some interesting ways. When we first started out a couple of decades ago some competitors would try to size us up by asking us about our “head count.” Since the founders sometimes brought their dogs to work we could add a few extra to the head count! One key executive’s dog was named “Shadow,” so it just was natural that the dog he loved could be immortalized in the name of the Shadowbase data replication product.

Later, dogs would sometimes appear in ads as in the “We’re All Ears!” campaign illustrating how we do our best to listen to our customer’s needs and wishes. Today, the mascots for the Shadowbase Products Group are two Labrador Retrievers named “Source” and “Target”. They illustrate features of like-to-like and like-to-dissimilar data replication since they are both similar and different at the same time.
